The theme for the fall semester is simple chemistry; topics are atomic structure, nomenclature, ionic and covalent bonds, acids and bases, physical vs. chemical changes, and properties of solids, liquids and gasses. The theme for the spring is simple physics. Some of the topics we will cover are: levers, gears, pulleys, forces, magnetism, electricity, sound and light. The students will have assigned reading from provided supplements and/or research each week to prepare for class. Homework assignments are hands-on as often as possible. More than any other subject, science receives the greatest benefit from group interaction. As experiments are performed, new questions and ideas arise and the resolution thereof brings benefit to the entire group. Doing science with a group of junior high students is an energizing and exciting experience!
